When I was in college in Corpus Christi, I became very lonely and depressed. I started walking to the beach in front of the University and would watch the jumping fish in the sunrise. The light would reflect on their brilliant scales in the bright rose colors of the early morning sun.
I made it my routine to walk to the beach and watch them. They inspired me to give up meat, to never ever eat fish again. I came there every morning and thanked them for bringing this light into the world.
Then one day I came a little late. After I watched them jumping for a while, I started the walk back to campus and saw on the far side of the beach so many people, families, fishing for them. I was so heartbroken and remembered the time I used to fish and that I used to eat these beautiful beings. It broke my heart to see people laughing at their catches and missing the chance to simply notice and respect them.
I will always speak out for these all too often forgotten friends. They want to live. Please let’s start being kind to them and stop killing them.
