After some 50 odd years, I started pretty young, I gave up fly fishing, actually all fishing, a few years back. The sport certainly gets you into some very beautiful environments & has many pluses so why did I quit? As a catch & release angler I was all too aware of the results, a good percentage of released fish don’t make it & of those that do, some suffer serious damage to their mouths as anyone fishing catch & release waters will tell you, if they’re honest. So after some serious soul searching I decided that torturing fish just to show I could outsmart them (a fish, really?) wasn’t worth it to me anymore. I now go hiking instead, plenty of glorious country, way more interesting native plants than there are beside rivers, just as isolating if that’s what you want & plenty of animals, nothing to kill & cheaper. I recommend it.
