I remember going fishing with my teenage friends. It was catch and release–but then I refused when I realized we were supposed to hook fishes’ mouths, then put them back in the water bleeding, with open wounds that would inevitably get infected and cause immense suffering. As a neurologist, the notion that fish do not feel pain or don’t suffer or feel pleasure is absurd. Why would fish have the basic neurological wiring that we do if they did not also experience sensations like pain? Finally, scientists are starting to acknowledge the sentiency of fish.
