{Translated and abridged}: The moment I decided to turn up for animals, against fishing in particular, was when I took my canoe out. I didn’t see any fishing rod, but an angler was very angry. I thought to myself: ‘You shouldn’t be mad, I should be. You intentionally destroy a living being, while I haven’t intentionally destroyed anything.’
I then applied to be a member of Animal Welfare. In their magazine Animal, I read about the bio industry and other animal abuse. I have since been committed to animals in general, and fish in particular.
As a kid I often thought, ‘Why doesn’t the religion class talk about animals?’ If you teach children to be good with people, why not mention the animals? There’s every reason to. We deal with animals all our lives, even if you never own a pet. A lot of people’s love for animals is limited to pets. This is why I call not only for animal love, but also justice for animals.
Strangely, there are people who give even a toddler a fishing rod. ‘The kids like it,’ they say. Is everything that children or adults like good? Is fishing good because it is liked? It is extremely harmful for the animals involved. It’s actually worse than an adult doing it, the child lacks the carefulness and fine motor skills to unhook the fish.
