As the daughter of a country boy from Nebraska, fishing was the only meaningful time spent with my father. So, all six children learned to fish, and I cherished alone time with my father who never learned to truly love fish. I stopped fishing when I was a teenager, and became a vegetarian. I am unwilling to put a hook or to extract a hook, from the mouth a living being. Nor can I ever eat fish. I apologize to the fish whom I yanked from their lakes, whom I stole from their families, mother fish whose bellies were bursting with eggs that would never be spread. Human beings are not the only beings—and I welcome the day when humans stop harming fellow beings –non-human and human beings deserve respect and protection.
